The Kentucky House of Representative adopted House Resolution No. 25 on February 16, 2010. In this resolution the “members of the House of Representative collectively urge cities of at least 25,000 citizens to include dementia training in their annual training for police officers, emergency medical technicians, and firefighters. The members of the House of Representatives further collectively urge counties and sheriffs to include dementia training in their annual training for emergency medical service providers and deputy sheriffs, and urge the Kentucky State Police to provide similar training for its troopers.”

The Alzheimer’s Association has made their 2010 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report available. This report includes data on prevalence, mortality, costs of Alzheimer’s care, caregiving, and a special report on race, ethnicity, and Alzheimer’s disease and details the escalation of Alzheimer’s, which currently impacts over five million Americans.

On March 11, 2010, Canada ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)— the first legally binding international treaty protecting the rights of persons with disabilities. The CRPD, in 50 articles, articulates what existing human rights mean within a disability context and establishes reporting and monitoring procedures for States Parties. Additionally, there is an Optional Protocol (OP) which provides for a complaints mechanism. The OP allows groups and individuals, after having exhausted all national resources, to have the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities consider a claim that a State Party has violated the provisions in the CRPD.
