The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) conducted the Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP), a national study on youth in custody. The results, obtained by interviewing juvenile offenders, were published in the OJJDP’s May 2010 Juvenile Justice Bulletin.

Ontario Bill 168 presents new rules on workplace violence and harassment, some of which are more potentially more complicated for Canadian fire departments, according to an article in the May 2010 issue of Firefighting in Canada.

A group of youth met at a forum on restraint and seclusion last August in Westborough, Massachusetts to talk about their experience in different systems including child welfare, mental health, and juvenile justice. More youth are publicly discussing the negative impact restraint and seclusion methods have had on their lives, according to an article published in Children’s Voice, a publication of the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA).

In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, half of those who suffer a traumatic brain injury will experience clinical depression in the year following, making them eight times more likely to become depressed than someone not injured.

New Beginnings, a 60-bed facility in Maryland for youth charged with serious crimes that opened in June 2009, is the first to base its programs on those used for decades in Missouri, which has the lowest rate of juvenile repeat offenders in the country. The “Missouri model” focuses on placing youth into small settings where they can receive intense counseling, according to a recent article in USA Today.

The Georgia State Board of Education is proposing three new rules on topics which include seclusion and restraint, education facility design and construction standards, and high school graduation assessments.

Proposed rulemakings are rules that are being considered for adoption by the State Board of Education. Prior to adoption rules must be formally initiated and submitted for a public review period of at least 30 calendar days.
