The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) recently honored a group of behavioral health facilities who have taken strong measures to prevent use of seclusion and restraint.
Facilities were invited by SAMSHA to apply for national recognition. Facilities had to demonstrate reduction in use of restraint and seclusion.

A Scarborough, Maine family worried for their six year old child’s life due to repeated use of therapeutic restraint used in public schools, according to the Sun Journal.
Brandon Baizley, who was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiance disorder, has been restrained over 25 times in the past year and a half.

The Nebraska Department of Education developed a technical assistance document, Developing School Policies & Procedures for Physical Restraint and Seclusion in Nebraska Schools.
The document was created to provide schools information and guidance to create or revise policies regarding use of restraint and seclusion, based on national policy directions and research.

Phonagnosia, also known as “voice blindness,” is a disorder that allows a person to hear every characteristic of someone else’s voice, including whether it is male, female, young, old, or happy or sad. The only thing a phonagnosic can’t recognize is who the voice belongs to, according to an article in The Boston Globe.
