Do students learn faster when they’re grouped by ability instead of age?

That’s the premise behind the latest learning curve: Using iPads and other digital-age technology to instill learning. With students able to learn at their own pace through the blended learning model, children as young as kindergarteners are eagerly adopting the change from traditional classroom methods.

“In the last three years, California schools have issued more than 2 million suspensions.”

In an effort to address this problem, the California Endowment, a private health foundation, has created a $1 million fund to help schools shape their culture in a positive, not punitive, way. Through supporting guidance for school leaders, teachers, students, and parents, the Endowment intends to enable schools to focus on the underlying causes of misconduct and apply positive behavioral support to decrease incidents of misbehavior. An informative website and toolkit will be made available, as well as training, grants, and other strategies for success.

Did you know that children on the autism spectrum are at high risk for bullying?

The initial results of a survey by the Interactive Autism Network (IAN) are staggering: 63% of 1,167 children with autism between ages six and 15 have been bullied. These children also experience meltdowns and aggressive outbursts triggered by bullies.

Per a survey done by Cox Communications Teen Online & Wireless Safety, “38% of teens have experience with cyberbullying.” If you’re concerned about cyberbullying, check out a free live event on Saturday, April 21: “9 Lights in a Child’s Life,” streamed online from its Parker, CO location. A panel composed of nine leaders in the community, including 15-year-old child safety advocate Cassandra Perkins, a spokesperson for Be Your Own You (BYOU), a girls’ self-esteem company, will discuss internet safety and strategies for adults and children.
