The Isambard Community School in Swindon, UK is working toward an anti-bullying accreditation, and aims to complete the first phase of the award in early 2012.

The accreditation involves immediately addressing any concerns students have regarding bullying. Updates on the school’s progress will be available on its website.

The Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex in WI has undergone changes including adding special, separate units for vulnerable and/or violent residents in an effort to de-escalate these individuals from stages of agitation, according to a recent article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

A study in Neurology suggests that the size of different areas of the brain could predict the likelihood of symptoms associated with early Alzheimer’s disease.

The findings were based on three years of research conducted with 159 people with an average age of 76 who did not have Alzheimer’s at the beginning of the study. Researchers used brain imaging to measure the thicknesses of different areas of the brain based on other research that already suggests that certain areas of the brain shrink in those with Alzheimer’s disease.

The state of Wyoming released a survey indicating that over half of its middle school students have been bullied on school grounds in 2011, and that a quarter of them admitted to bullying other students. Findings also revealed that more female students reported being bullied than male students.

Ohio amended its Administrative Code for the Ohio Department of Mental Health Certification Standards to include Chapter 5122-26-16: Seclusion, Restraint, and Time-Out, effective January 1, 2012. This rule provides general requirements for use and reduction of seclusion and restraint.

S. 2020, Keeping All Students Safe, was introduced in Congress on December 16  by Senator Thomas Harkin (D-IA).

This bill is intended to protect students from harmful and life-threatening seclusion and restraint practices. It was previously introduced as HR 4247 and HR 1381.
