As a part of the CEC Exhibitor Showcase, Kendra Stea, CPI’s Director of Client Services, will present From Chaos to Calm: Understanding Moments of Crisis for Persons With Autism Spectrum Disorders. Her presentation will be on Friday, April 23, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Ryman Ballroom B of the Gaylord Opryland Convention Center.

The presentation will provide those who support students with autism spectrum disorders with strategies to use when a student demonstrates challenging or potentially out-of-control behavior.

When a student endures a crisis moment, one of three outcomes will result: the situation will become worse, stay the same, or improve. In such a moment, staff can become a catalyst to chaos or a conduit to calm. Understanding strategies available from the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training program is a proactive approach to position educators to be more prepared for the next possible crisis situation.

As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of nonverbal and verbal strategies for managing disruptive behavior.
  • Recognize a student’s stages of escalation during a crisis situation.
  • Respond with greater consistency and confidence when helping a student de-escalate.
  • Use debriefing strategies and skills after a crisis situation.
  • Gain a more thorough understanding of the risks and dangers of restraints.
  • Recognize the importance of a long-term plan which includes an ongoing training process for staff.

CPI personnel will also be available at Booth 712 in the Expo.
