When a student acts out at school, how well do you understand what’s causing that behavior?

For John Heiderscheidt, the safety coordinator for Elgin School District U-46, it’s about looking beneath the surface.

“Today, bad behavior may be based on something else at home,” Heiderscheidt says. “And those experiences are knowingly, or unknowingly, going to affect kids’ lives.”

Since U-46 implemented CPI training, the district has seen fewer suspensions, expulsions, and staff injured by students. CPI’s prevention-based strategies teach staff how to approach a hostile situation in a way that allows both the student and the staff member to uncover the cause of the conflict and de-escalate emotional stress.
