Smolderingremains, an artist with autism and a contributor to deviantART.com, a social networking site for artists, has designed an alternative symbol for autism. As easy to draw as a peace sign, the symbol is simple, supportive, and subtle, according to the artist. With just two shapes and two colors, the design is intended to convey a view of autism more encompassing than the view imparted by multicolored puzzles.

In parts of India, it’s extremely difficult for a child with a disability to be admitted to a nonspecialized school. Often, only a sympathetic teacher is responsible for allowing a differently-abled child to join the classroom, but if that teacher leaves, that child is cast adrift again.

Jennifer Allen, mother of a boy with Asperger’s syndrome, has filmed a documentary, “Coping to Excelling: Solutions for School-Aged Children Diagnosed With High-Functioning Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome,” a 68-minute video designed to help families who may be struggling with the reality of their children’s diagnoses.

A new residential community for adults with autism will be constructed in Sonoma, CA. The facility is a project of Sweetwater Spectrum, a local nonprofit organization founded by parents of children with autism.
