In parts of India, it’s extremely difficult for a child with a disability to be admitted to a nonspecialized school. Often, only a sympathetic teacher is responsible for allowing a differently-abled child to join the classroom, but if that teacher leaves, that child is cast adrift again.

Jennifer Allen, mother of a boy with Asperger’s syndrome, has filmed a documentary, “Coping to Excelling: Solutions for School-Aged Children Diagnosed With High-Functioning Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome,” a 68-minute video designed to help families who may be struggling with the reality of their children’s diagnoses.

New Jersey teen Justin Canha is part of a transition program for special education students involving intensive coaching in the workplace and community in pursuit of lifelong independence.

Justin, who falls in the middle range of the autism spectrum, is a dedicated cartoonist who has sold some of his works through a local art gallery, some for as much as $4,000 each.

A new article, “Ten Things Every Child With Autism Wishes You Knew,” has been added to the CPI Article Library.

According to author Ellen Notbohm, “Autism was once thought an ‘incurable’ disorder, but that notion is crumbling in the face of knowledge and understanding that is increasing even as you read this. Equipping those around our children with simple understanding of autism’s most basic elements has a tremendous impact on their ability to journey towards productive, independent adulthood.”

A new toy for children with autism is designed to help stimulate minds and teach positive behaviors.

Designed for children aged six months and up, Auti was created at the Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. The furry toy has sensors that can detect touch and sound. The toy responds positively with movement during a friendly interaction, but shuts down in response to negative behaviors like hitting or yelling.
