With research suggesting that the “majority of our teachers believe that the ‘ideal student’ is an extrovert,” how can we reverse the stigma against introversion?

Quiet and shy students can be mistakenly viewed as disconnected, without personality, or even low-functioning. As schools become more crowded with one-size-fits-all classrooms, the default plan often caters to the extroverts, the students wriggling in their chairs or talking out of turn. But when the importance of engaging all types of learners is overlooked, school can present missed opportunities for students, teachers, and parents.

StopBullying.gov, which provides information on preventing bullying, features cartoons for kids who deal with bullying behaviors. In “The Playground Is for Everyone,” aimed at kids in early childhood, a pair of students prevent two classmates from playing on the climbing bars, until another pupil, Zach, identifies the behavior and intervenes. A teacher reinforces Zach’s recognition of the bullying, reminding the kids that everyone deserves to thrive in an emotionally and physically safe environment.

April 2011 saw the first-ever conference on bullying prevention when The White House spoke out against bullying being perceived as just a normal rite of passage. Over the past year, parents, students, educators, nonprofits, and community organizers have elevated the issue, raising their voices and launching campaigns.

Are you interested in promoting early literacy and learning for your child and within your community?

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is holding its annual Week of the Young Child™ celebration from April 22 through April 28. The week’s aim is to “focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.”

The Isambard Community School in Swindon, UK is working toward an anti-bullying accreditation, and aims to complete the first phase of the award in early 2012.

The accreditation involves immediately addressing any concerns students have regarding bullying. Updates on the school’s progress will be available on its website.

The state of Wyoming released a survey indicating that over half of its middle school students have been bullied on school grounds in 2011, and that a quarter of them admitted to bullying other students. Findings also revealed that more female students reported being bullied than male students.

S. 2020, Keeping All Students Safe, was introduced in Congress on December 16  by Senator Thomas Harkin (D-IA).

This bill is intended to protect students from harmful and life-threatening seclusion and restraint practices. It was previously introduced as HR 4247 and HR 1381.
