In the early 1990s, the Vermont Department of Education created the BEST Project (Building Effective Supports for Teaching) as a response to requests from schools to help address the needs of students with challenging behaviors. Over the years, the BEST Project has provided Vermont educators with numerous learning opportunities to fill their professional toolboxes with effective practices and strategies. As one of its first statewide efforts, BEST partnered with the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) to develop a cadre of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Certified Instructors available to Vermont schools. CPI’s training was chosen because of its emphasis on prevention, de-escalation, personal safety, and nonharmful physical intervention techniques.
