A new service provided by hospitals in the northern suburbs of Chicago is intended to offer individuals with mental health illnesses a more calming environment and experience than they might receive in a traditional emergency room. Individuals can come to a “Living Room” and receive immediate care in a crisis situation, provided by staff counselors who have successfully handled their own mental health illnesses.

The RIBA-II robot, manufactured by RIKEN, is designed to lift patients weighing up to 176 pounds from the floor, bed, or chair, and transport them to another location. Modeled to look like a bear, RIBA-II can also recognize voice commands, shake hands, and offer greetings.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will share money saved through reduction of errors and faulty care with hospitals that improve care in 2012.

 The incentive, part of President Obama’s changes to the healthcare system, aims to reduce errors that result in extra Medicare costs and repeated hospital stays.
