For residents of Milwaukee County’s Crisis Resource Center, sometimes a simple gift is all people need to know they’re cared for. Nancy Maier, a retired schoolteacher, crochets a scarf a day to “give comfort to a person who feels like they have no one who loves them.”

The Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex in WI has undergone changes including adding special, separate units for vulnerable and/or violent residents in an effort to de-escalate these individuals from stages of agitation, according to a recent article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Ohio amended its Administrative Code for the Ohio Department of Mental Health Certification Standards to include Chapter 5122-26-16: Seclusion, Restraint, and Time-Out, effective January 1, 2012. This rule provides general requirements for use and reduction of seclusion and restraint.

A new service provided by hospitals in the northern suburbs of Chicago is intended to offer individuals with mental health illnesses a more calming environment and experience than they might receive in a traditional emergency room. Individuals can come to a “Living Room” and receive immediate care in a crisis situation, provided by staff counselors who have successfully handled their own mental health illnesses.

According to a report released by Medco Health Solutions, Inc., one in five adults took at least one medicine for anxiety and depression last year. The number was higher for women, at one in four.
