Louisiana adopted SB 59 on June 29, 2011. It requires the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to create definitions, rules, guidelines, and procedures regarding the use of restraint and seclusion on children with exceptionalities. It also requires documentation of incidents of restraint and seclusion and notification plans for parents and legal guardians.

Workers’ Memorial Day, which recognizes workers who have died or been injured at work, is April 28.

This day also marks the fortieth anniversary of both the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (of the US Department of Health and Human Services) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (of the US Department of Labor). Commemoration of this day is designed to promote safe and healthier workplaces.

California passed Assembly Bill 1083, which became effective as of July 1, 2010. The bill requires hospitals to conduct security and safety assessments on a minimum of an annual basis. It also requires hospitals to updates security plans annually.

In a recent article in Canadian Occupation Safety Magazine, CPI’s Bill Badzmierowski was quoted with regards to the workplace violence and harassment training–

    “If someone gets in your face, your first impulse is to talk or hit back. But there are other things you can do and most people don’t know what they are. How close you stand to the person, your body language and facial expressions make a big difference. There are practical ways to train employees to defuse a situation and prevent its escalation.”
