The Isambard Community School in Swindon, UK is working toward an anti-bullying accreditation, and aims to complete the first phase of the award in early 2012.

The accreditation involves immediately addressing any concerns students have regarding bullying. Updates on the school’s progress will be available on its website.

S. 2020, Keeping All Students Safe, was introduced in Congress on December 16  by Senator Thomas Harkin (D-IA).

This bill is intended to protect students from harmful and life-threatening seclusion and restraint practices. It was previously introduced as HR 4247 and HR 1381.

Staff members at Weber State University are offered the opportunity to take CPI’s Nonviolent Intervention® training course once each semester, according to an article in the Weber State University Signpost.

The course is taught by R.C. Callahan, training and development specialist, and Robin Helton, a sergeant at the campus.

The Hazelwood School District in Florissant, MO, was awarded $1.4 million in grant funding by the US Department of Education for a Safe Schools-Healthy Students Initiative.

 The funds will go toward district programs focusing on positive behavioral supports and interventions (PBIS), bullying prevention, crisis prevention and intervention training, and more.

The National School Safety Center and state school superintendents are sponsoring America’s Safe Schools Week, October 16-22, 2011. This designation is intended to motivate schools, administrators, parents, students, and communities to advocate for school safety.

The Wyoming Department of Education is taking comments on its proposed state restraint and seclusion guidelines for public schools. The agency will also hold public discussion forums on the subject.

School districts have until December 31, 2011 to approve their own policies.

Oregon adopted HB 2939 on August 2, 2011. It prohibits the use of mechanical, chemical, and prone restraints on students in public schools. Physical restraint may be used only under specific circumstances, following specific procedures.
