The Wyoming Department of Education is taking comments on its proposed state restraint and seclusion guidelines for public schools. The agency will also hold public discussion forums on the subject.

School districts have until December 31, 2011 to approve their own policies.

Oregon adopted HB 2939 on August 2, 2011. It prohibits the use of mechanical, chemical, and prone restraints on students in public schools. Physical restraint may be used only under specific circumstances, following specific procedures.

As we reported earlier in the month, TASH, a disability advocacy organization in Washington, D.C., held a congressional briefing on national efforts to reduce the use of restraint and seclusion in school settings on June 28. A full video of the briefing is now available on the TASH website.

Students in Yankton, SD had the opportunity to attend a summer class designed to expose them to careers in the mental health field.

School officials organized the course for students since the local schools don’t offer anything similar in the regular curriculum. Community professionals came in to provide students with hands-on learning experiences.

A school in Harker Heights, TX has developed an art class especially for students with autism.

According to one parent, the class provides her son with the ability to express emotions that he would not be able to communicate through speech. He can also incorporate some of his favorite things into his artwork, like animals and superheroes.

After implementing CPI’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training, the Lafayette Parish School System in Louisiana experienced a 30 percent reduction in the use of physical restraints, a decrease in the number of suspensions related to teacher assaults, and an increase in student achievement levels.
