The US Department of Education awarded grants to 10 applicants in the second phase of the Race to the Top program as part of President Obama’s education reform program.
The winners are the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, and Rhode Island.
Race to the Top is a $4.35 billion fund designed to aid reform in four main areas, including adoption of standards to prepare students for success in college and the workplace; building data systems to measure student success; recruiting and developing teachers; and turning around low performing schools.
Forty-six states and the District of Columbia applied for the Race to the Top in phases 1 and 2.
The Department of Education has requested additional funding for a possible third phase of funding next year.
